The Battle of the BB Creams/CC Creams | Ponds vs Lakme vs The Body Shop vs Nykaa

BB creams and CC creams are a great alternative to full-blown foundations for those who are looking for a more natural finish with their makeup or who don’t want to burn too big a hole in their pockets. They are also excellent for the days when you want to be ready in a jiffy because since they provide a more natural coverage, they blend pretty easily and quickly. They are fast becoming a favourite of teenage girls who have just started using makeup and even those who are pro at blending have at least one for the “no makeup-makeup days”. While in the east BB creams and CC creams come with a ton of skincare benefits, the variants in India are pretty much tinted moisturisers with some SPF or essential oils. Here are the details of the BB/CC creams I have used till date and how they fared for me!

BB Creams/CC Creams Comparison Swatches Review | Ponds vs Lakme vs The Body Shop vs Nykaa

1. Ponds White Beauty BB Cream – This BB Cream is used and loved by a number of fellow bloggers, but I have a major issue with the words “Fairness Cream” printed on the packaging and the fact that this cream comes in only one shade. That being said, the reason why so many people swear by this cream is that if the shade matches your skin tone, the cream will provide an even brightened finish to your skin with almost medium coverage. The formula is a slightly thick, fairly pigmented cream that blends in quite easily with the skin. Also, the cream provides SPF 30, eliminating the need for sunscreen too. If only Ponds could stop using fairness as a marketing agenda and bring out more shades, this would be a decent product for an extremely affordable price of INR 165 for an 18gm tube. 2. Lakme 9 to 5 CC Cream (Bronze) – The Lakme 9 to 5 CC Cream is the light-weight cousin of the Ponds BB Cream in terms of formula. It is slightly more watery, has a fresh citrusy scent and the shade Bronze is a slightly yellower version of the Ponds cream, but with slightly lighter coverage. It comes in 4 different shades (Bronze being the second lightest) that should cover most Indian skin tones considering that it does blend in quite seamlessly with the natural skin tone. If you want a CC cream that you can simply apply and forget about then this product is meant for you. It provides a more glowy finish than the Ponds cream that gives a more matte finish, so this one might not work for extremely oily skin types. A 30gm tube of this CC Cream is priced at INR 315. Click here to buy.

3. The Body Shop Tea Tree Flawless BB Cream (02) – If you are someone with acne prone skin who wants to treat their pimples while covering them up then The Body Shop Tea Tree Flawless BB Cream is your best bet. This BB cream provides light to medium coverage and has the cooling goodness of tea tree oil that actually helps in shrinking my active acne. This BB cream is truly the best of both worlds in terms of skincare and makeup for my skin type. My only issue with the product is that it has slight pink/greyish undertones which do not work the best with my warmer undertones, but I do use the product when my skin is acting up nevertheless (I am a shade 02 in the range). Priced at approximately INR 1200 in India, this one is the most expensive for sure and is best reserved for the days when your skin is really acting up. Click here to buy.

4. Nykaa Skin Genius BB Cream (04 – Spiced Cinnamon) – Last on this list is the Nykaa Skin Genius BB Cream. This one also has a good formula that provides medium coverage and a smooth finish to the skin, but it oxidises like crazy and turns orange on my skin, as you can see in the swatch. If you are able to find a suitable shade in this range (currently available in 5 shades) then it is a good BB cream that keeps the skin hydrated without making it greasy. The price of INR 349 for a 30gm tube is affordable too. Click here to buy.

BB Creams/CC Creams Comparison Swatches Review | Ponds vs Lakme vs The Body Shop vs Nykaa

Overall, while each of these products has their own pros and cons, my personal favourite is the Lakme 9 to 5 CC Cream because of its light-weight formula, my skin but better coverage, and yellow brightening undertones. It lasts for 4-6 hours on the skin and is excellent for wearing to college or office if you just want to even out your skintone a bit or hide small spots.

Nykaa SkinGenius All-in-One BB Cream | Review

Yet another BB Cream has been launched in India, and this one is from Nykaa! The new Nykaa SkinGenius All-in-One BB Cream is a cruelty-free, SLS Free and Paraben free BB cream that contains SPF 30 and claims to provide a flawless, soft-focus finish to the skin. Here is what I thought of the product after trying it out a number of times.

Nykaa SkinGenius All-in-One BB Cream | Review

The product has a creamy formula that spreads quite easily on the skin but takes some time to settle into the skin. It may look a little streaky with a brush unless you take some time to blend it in. However, once blended nicely and allowed to sink in, the product provides an even finish to the skin without feeling heavy or cakey. Although, the formula does have a slightly sticky feel to it. Upon application, the cream provides a cooling sensation to the skin and also hydrates the skin pretty well. This is because of the presence of ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Cucumber, Jojoba and Vitamin E.

The BB cream is available in 5 shades. I picked the shade 04 – Spiced Cinnamon, which is clearly a bit too dark and orangey for my skin tone, as you can see in the arm swatch. Also, the shade oxidises and darkens a little after application. It seems yellow toned initially, but turns orangeish within a few minutes. The only way it can work for my skin tone is if I use it with a fairly bright concealer. It provides a light coverage and a very natural look to the skin but does a fine job at evening the skin tone, removing any dullness or patchiness. On my skin it stays fairly matte for 4-5 hours and the coverage stays intact too.

Overall, this is a nice BB cream that provides a natural, even skin tone along with hydration and sun protection. The price point of INR 349 is fairly reasonable too. The only con of the product is the fact that the shade I have oxidizes and looks too orangey. If you can find the right shade match in the range then it is an excellent product for daily use if you want a hint of coverage and decent hydration.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Flawless BB Cream | Review and Swatches

The Body Shop Tea Tree Flawless BB Cream is something that I have been using for a long time, especially whenever I suffer from red and painful hormonal breakouts. When you have active acne on your face, you may not want to step out of the house with the redness showing but you would also not want to clog your pores with heavy makeup that will only make the situation worse. This BB cream is the perfect solution to the dilemma because it provides medium coverage while being light-weight and helps in shrinking the pimples because of the tea tree oil it contains.

I wear the shade 2 from the range which is the second darkest of the 3 shades available in India. This shade suits medium Indian skin tones pretty well and provides a decent coverage that will hide any redness or discoloration on the face. It has an almost matte finish on the skin and provides a smooth appearance to the face without settling in the creases or pores. I love the fact that the tea tree oil instantly cools the skin post-application, which is exactly what my skin needs when it’s suffering from an angry breakout.  Its longevity is also decent and the cream lasts on my face for a good 6-8 hours with a setting powder on top.

Overall, I feel that this BB cream is an excellent alternative to a foundation for those who have acne prone skin and what a natural look with some coverage. Priced at INR 1095 for a travel-friendly tube that contains 40ml of the product, this BB cream is a little pricey but is honestly the only makeup product that I feel comfortable using when I have acne on my face. Do give it a shot if you want some coverage for your breakouts but want them to heal at the same time.
