Nivea Sun Protect & Refresh | Invisible Cooling Spray | Review

Raise your hands if you are lazy when it comes to applying sunscreen! I am sure that at least half my readers have their hands raised high. Personally, I have been extremely religious at applying sunscreen on my face over the past few years, but am super lazy when it comes to slathering sunscreen on my body. On most days, this is OK, because I spend most of my day indoors, but when I am on vacation, I need my body to be protected, and crave for an easy way to apply sunscreen. When I received the Nivea Sun Protect & Refresh Invisible Cooling Spray in a PR package recently, I was excited to test for myself whether this could be that easy to apply sunscreen that everybody craves. Here are my thoughts on this product after using it on numerous occasion.

The Packaging

The Nivea Sun Protect & Refresh Invisible Cooling Spray has sturdy packaging in the form of a blue and yellow bottle with a pump. I personally find the packaging quite cool and appropriate for a sunscreen, and I feel that it is the perfect size to take on a vacation so that you can reapply it all day without the risk of running out of sunscreen. Also the cap secures tightly on the lid and the bottle seems leakproof, which is always a plus.

The Formula

As expected, this chemical sunscreen with a high SPF of 50 comes in the form of a transparent liquid that coats the skin evenly when sprayed from a distance. The troubling ingredient that tops the list though is denatured alcohol, which I believe is required to make the formula “sprayable”, because this ingredient is normally found in perfumes. The concern here is that denatured alcohol can be incredibly drying on the skin, and it may not be advisable to spray it all over your body, especially your face. This is the reason why I have been using this sunscreen only on my body and keep it away from my face and neck at all costs.

Coming to the feel of the product, even though it contains a drying ingredient in significant quantities, this sunscreen settles to a sheeny finish on my skin, as if I have applied an oil on my body (check the image of my arm above). Now, if you are heading to the swimming pool or the beach then you may actually enjoy the sheen, but you may not want your skin to glisten on a regular work day. The oily finish does make the product fairly water resistant though, which again fits the beach-swimming pool theme. Also, even though the product claims to be cooling on the skin, I personally do not experience much cooling when using the product, but I am fine with it not living up to this claim as long as it protects my skin from the sun.

My Final Verdict on the Nivea Sun Protect & Refresh Invisible Cooling Spray

Overall, I have mixed feelings about this product – I like that it is easy to apply, has a high SPF, does not leave a white cast and is water resistant, but I don’t think it is suitable for regular use due to the presence of denat. alcohol as the first ingredient and because of its glossy finish. The price of INR 799 for a 200ml bottle seems decent for SPF 50.ย  My verdict – if you are someone with normal skin, the you can perhaps use this one on your body (not face) when you head out to the beach or swimming pool (which is how I am gonna use this up) or when you require easy top-ups on a hectic day out, but for regular use, this may not be the best option.
