A good lip liner is a must if you are planning to wear a dark lipstick, especially one with a moist formulation. I was recently in the need of a deep plum lip liner to go with a lipstick I was planning to wear to a wedding, and I picked up the Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Liner in the shade Rich Wine from the nearest makeup counter in sight as I was in a hurry. Did this liner prevent my plum lipstick from bleeding and smudging throughout the event? Read on to find out!
The Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liners come in a black twist up packaging with a colour-coordinated lid for their 11 shades. The shade range varies from everyday nudes to bright reds and wines and you get 0.28 gm of product for INR 350. The SA at the makeup counter swatched a number of their shades for me and I felt that the lighter shades were creamier and more evenly pigmented than the darker ones. However, since she insisted that this was because the testers were old, and because I actually needed this particular shade and was short on time, I picked up the shade Rich Wine despite my inhibitions.
When I finally got around to using the brand new liner, unfortunately, it was a little dry and patchy too, but not so much as the tester. Perhaps it is due to the twist up packaging of the product which leads to the drying up of the formulation or it is this way to begin with, or I got an old product, but the formula was a little patchy and I had to drag the liner on my lips instead of getting a smooth application. It felt a little stiff instead of creamy and in fact, a bit of the product broke off while application due to the stiffness. Personally, I am used to creamier and smoother lip liners so I found this one a little difficult to apply, but once in place, the shade did look beautiful and managed to define my lips quite well.
I used this liner to outline my lips and also all over the lips to make my lipstick stay on longer. I wore it with my Sugar Never Say Dry Creme Lipstick in the shade Mauve Actually and I must say that the liner prevented the lipstick from bleeding or fading for severals hours which included an oily meal. The Sugar lipstick usually fades within a few hours because it is a moist formulation but the liner gave it the longevity of a matte lipstick and helped deepen its rich colour too!
Overall, I liked the shade of the lip liner and the fact that it helped my lipstick stay put all night long but I wasn’t a fan of the texture or the formulation of the product. If you can find this colour in a creamier pigmentation from another brand then I will recommend you to skip this one. You can try the nude lip liners from this range though as they are creamy and pretty!
