Another Friday, another edition of my Friday Musings. Let me tell you a little something about myself today. I am sure all of you like reading stories, short ones or novels, funny ones or tragedies, everybody has some genre that they gravitate towards. Well, ever since my childhood, I love to get lost in the dreamland of books. Reading is the first passion I inculcated when I was a child, the love for makeup came later on, perhaps around the time when a teacher noticed me touching up my lipstick after my performance for the school’s annual day was over!
I have been told that I used to memorize the stories that were read to me by my mother and grandma. I then used to recite them verbatim pretending that I was actually reading them from the book propped open in front of me. This hobby of reading soon evolved and gave birth to an enthusiasm for storytelling and writing. I believe that the words we share with the world make us immortal and help us in communicating with the unborn generations that we will never encounter in person.
I have initiated this endeavour of making my thoughts heard, in the form of my other blog, Scribbles in Grey. I know that many of you follow the blog but just in case you don’t, do check it out. It is a collection of short stories, poetry, and some personal reflections. I hope that you will enjoy it.
Let me know in the comments below what is the one story that has inspired you or has left an indelible impression on your mind. I will be back tomorrow with a beauty related post.
Amidst all the matte lip colors and liquid lipsticks, the humble lipgloss might get neglected but still holds an important position in my makeup drawer. There are those days when the lips are too dry or pigmented and simply do not cooperate with a matte finish product, a lipgloss is what emerges a hero on such occasions. It is extremely hard to find the perfect nude lip gloss for medium Indian skin tones, especially one from an international brand. The Loreal Paris Infallible Mega Gloss in the shade 110 I Got The Power is not just the perfect nude gloss for medium skin tones but is also extremely flattering on fair and deep complexions.
I personally do not like shimmery or glittery glosses for daily use. The glitter goes everywhere and does not really suit my face. This one is a cream formula, which is glossy but not shimmery at all, although they do have a few shimmery glosses in this range as well. The shade is the perfect pinkish brown that can be worn to work or even for a night out, thanks to the subtle shine that it provides.
The doe foot applicator picks up just the right amount of product which provides a semi-opaque finish in one coat. I would not recommend going for a second coat because that can get a bit messy. The formula is not sticky and is quite hydrating, in fact, it feels like a slightly heavy lip balm on the lips. It lasts for around 2-3 hours but you can extend the wear time by a couple of hours with the help of a nude lip liner. However, on most days I simply apply it directly to my bare lips and keep reapplying every few hours. The formula has a mild, sweet scent that lingers on throughout the wear time.
An 8 ml tube of this product is priced at INR 850 but you can grab it for around INR 600 online. It is still on the pricey side but I am willing to pay the price for the lovely color and the high-end packaging.
It is the perfect choice for the days when you are going for a no makeup – makeup look, and want something easy for the lips. Pair it with nude eye makeup for an amazing monochromatic effect. If you want to keep only one lip gloss in your collection then I would highly recommend this one!
If you follow me on Instagram (@mrinalinism) then you might know that I had promised a battle of the foundations, so here we are. I recently purchased the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation in the shades 230 Natural Buff and 322 Warm Honey and like any other beauty lover I have loads to say about how this foundation compares with the ruling drugstore favorites, the Loreal Paris True Match Foundation and the Loreal Paris Infallible 24H Foundation. I have previously reviewed my holy grail foundation, the Loreal Paris Infallible in the shade 250 Radiant Sand over here so do check out that post for a more detailed review of the same.
Now, here are my thoughts on the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation and its comparison with the products from Loreal:
Color: The shade range of the Fit Me Foundations seems to run a little darker than I expected. The color 322 Warm Honey is clearly very dark for me while 230 Natural Buff seems to be the closest match for my skin tone. Both these shades have a peachy brown undertone, which might look a bit dull and muddy on the face. The shade 250 Radiant Sand of the Infallible range is the perfect match for my skin tone and has a yellow undertone. As for the True Match range, N4 Beige seems to be the nearest match to my complexion but it somehow appears pinkish in the beginning but seems to oxidize with time and ends up matching my skin tone. So the Infallible foundation is clearly the winner of this category.
Coverage: I feel that the True Match and Fit Me foundations have similar coverage. They provide a medium coverage that can be built to a full coverage by adding a second layer of the product. The Infallible on the other hand has a full coverage in one coat and you do not need a concealer unless you have some really huge blemishes. Again, if full coverage is your need then you must stick with Loreal Infallible.
Finish- The Fit Me Matte+Poreless foundations have a comfortable matte finish. They are highly suitable for oily skin as they do not add any shine to the face. However, the lack of a glow might seem a little flat. Somehow, they seem to moisturize the skin despite being matte foundations and they are so easy to wear that I often forget that I have foundation on! The True Match Foundations are also moisturizing but they have a more glowy finish that is suitable for dry skin. The Infallible foundations are extremely matte but have a brightening effect on my face due to the yellow undertones. However, they tend to get a little uncomfortable to wear after a few hours.
Longevity- The Fit Me and True Match foundations have a comparable longevity of about 4-6 hours on my skin. The Infallible foundation, on the other hand, can last up to 8-10 hours in a similar environment.
SPF- The True Match foundation has an SPF 17 while the Infallible Foundation has an SPF 18. The packaging of the Fit Me foundation does not mention an SPF, so I am not sure if this one contains any SPF or not.
Packaging- Both the Loreal foundations come with a pump while the Fit Me foundation does not have one. The lack of a pump makes it hard to use and difficult to travel with.
Price- The Maybelline Fit Me Foundation is priced at INR 525 only while equal volumes of the True Match and the Infallible foundations are priced at INR 1025 and INR 1400 respectively. With such a huge difference in price, I can definitely live without a pump!
Final Verdict- For oily skinned people like me the Infallible foundation is the best bet for long-lasting full coverage while the Fit Me foundation offers value for money and is great for daily wear. The True Match foundation is more suited for those with dry to combination skin types.
I hope this exhaustive review and comparison was useful and helps you in making the right foundation choice!
I recently used the Nivea After Shave Balm as a primer for a makeup look and loved the result so much that I decided to dedicate an entire post to this discovery. Several beauty gurus have showered praise upon this product for its priming properties and they are absolutely right! This balm has a semi-fluid consistency and a few drops are sufficient for covering the entire face. The key property is the sticky texture which allows the foundation to adhere to the skin and makes it stay in place the entire day. The stickiness might feel a little uncomfortable upon application but once you apply the makeup it will be fine.
The mild fragrance may seem a little manly but disappears within a few minutes. This is an extremely affordable alternative to a regular primer and is priced at only INR 235 for a 100ml bottle, which will definitely last you for months. It might not be able to mask giant pores but extends the longevity of makeup by hours while hydrating the skin. Additionally, this product is designed for sensitive skin and does not contain alcohol. So save your money and try this balm instead of splurging on high-end primers. I promise that it will not encourage the growth of facial hair 🙂
When it comes to perfumed products, The Body Shop is the leader of the game. Their body mists are the only products I use to keep smelling great all day long. As the weather is getting warmer, a soft, summery scent is the need of the hour and if you haven’t found your perfect fragrance yet then do try The Body Shop Fijian Water Lotus Fragrance Mist.
This one is a mild aqua scent with floral undertones. It reminds me of the scent emanating from a pool of water lilies. In my opinion, this body mist combines the freshness of a splash of water with the sweetness of summer blossoms, for a faint scent that offers respite from the sweltering heat. Bear in mind that this is a body mist, therefore, do not expect the longevity or strength of a perfume. You may need to refresh this scent throughout the day or can layer it with other products from the range. On its own, I am still able to smell the faint notes after 4 hours but they are not enough to fill the room with fragrance as soon as you walk in.
Also, can we spare a moment to appreciate the fascinating packaging of this product, I would purchase it just to decorate my dressing table. The Body Shop has recently been revamping the packaging of all their products and the new packaging is sleeker and has accents of black that impart it a high-end appeal. The intricate black design of this bottle looks so alluring, just like the perfume it holds. A 100 ml bottle is priced at INR 1095, which is quite pricey, but once you smell the fragrance, you will fall in love with it. This gem is definitely going to be my scent for Summer 2017.
I am late to the Maybelline Fit Me party because I have always been a Loreal girl, but now that I am here I might be converting slowly! I purchased the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in the shade #20 Sand several months ago but unfortunately, the shade was too light for me, so I shoved it to the back of my makeup drawer. However, I have recently been using it for brightening up my under eye area and also under my foundation to cover some dark blemishes and I must say that I am really enjoying the product now.
The concealer comes in a thin tube with a doe foot applicator that allows precise application. The formula is creamy and quite blendable and provides medium to full coverage. The texture is light and the product does not crease even after 8 hours of wear.
The best thing about the product is that it is quite affordable for the quality. The concealer is priced at INR 500 for a 6.8 ml tube, which is almost half the price of my favorite Loreal True Match Concealer! Although I feel that the Loreal concealer is a little more blendable and buildable, but for daily wear, I will most probably switch to this one because it is almost as good yet so much cheaper.
The only con of this product is that the shade range is quite limited. There are only 3 shades in the range with Sand being the medium shade. I will be purchasing the dark shade to wear on top of my foundation because clearly, this one is too light for that. It would be great if Maybelline could introduce at least 2 more shades in this range but if you find a shade that works for you then this product is definitely a keeper.
Hey everyone, how is the weekend going? You guys are the best when it comes to providing ideas for new posts, and this one is based on a suggestion from the lovely Sanchali (check out her blog here). Sanchali requested that I write a post about creating a natural finish using mineral makeup and wanted to know what are the products readily available in India which can be used for the same. Now, I do not have a lot of mineral makeup and I am definitely not a makeup artist, therefore I did my own version of the look and have used a combination of mineral makeup and pressed powder products.
The look that I have gone for couples nude glossy lips and brown toned eye makeup with smooth, glowing skin and a soft blush.
Here is a step by step description of how to recreate this look:
Step 1: Prime and Conceal
There are two golden rules that you need to follow when you work with powders. The first one is that powders need a base to stick to, therefore you must moisturize and prime your skin really well. I used a very unique product as a primer today, I went with the Nivea After Shave Balm for men! You may be surprised about this but it works as a really effective primer and is so affordable.
The second golden rule is to never apply cream products on top of powders. I needed to conceal a few blemishes on my skin, therefore I applied my favorite Loreal True Match Concealer (N4-5) to my primed skin before moving on to the mineral foundation.
I do not like overly pink blushes for my skin tone, therefore I mixed the blush and the bronzer shade from my Makeup Revolution Protection Palette in Medium. This combo gave a natural blush to my cheeks. Again, I used a Real Techniques brush to apply these products.
Step 4: Eye Shadow
I wanted a soft brown look for my eyes. I first applied the True Match concealer to my lids so that the powders would adhere to the skin. I then applied the bronzer shade from my Makeup Revolution palette to the whole lid and added a layer of the highlighter shade from the same palette, for a little bit of shimmer. I then created a brown eyeliner by using a wet brush to apply the dark brown shade from my Wet n Wild Comfort Zone Palette to the lash line.
This is the most important step if you want to get a glowing and natural finish with mineral/powder makeup. To prevent your skin from looking dry or cakey, use liberal amounts of a setting spray or facial mist. I have used the Loreal Paris Infallible Setting Spray but you can use any facial spray that you have at hand. This last step makes the makeup blend into the skin and gives a healthy shine to the face.
And that is it! It may seem a little lengthy but the actual application took me only 15 minutes. I am also linking all the products so that you can purchase whatever you like, however, you can easily recreate this look with any similar products that are available. Just remember the two golden rules and invest in good makeup brushes and a setting spray.
Night creams are an excellent way to replenish the beauty of your skin which is subjected to pollution, makeup, and harsh sunlight throughout the day. I believe that a good SPF during the day and an excellent overnight treatment are essential for glowing skin, apart from a healthy lifestyle of course. However, when a night cream claims to provide the results of a laser treatment with regular usage, then the expectations hit the ceiling.
The Loreal White Perfect Laser Overnight Treatment, which has recently been rebranded as the Loreal White Perfect Clinical Overnight Treatment, claims to improve the radiance of the skin with faster skin renewal and removal of dead cells. It also promises to even out the skin tone by reducing melanin generation. To be honest, the claims stated on the website sound a little scary, but since I read exceptional reviews for this product, I decided to give it a shot. I am perfectly happy with the complexion of my skin tone, so I was only interested in the expedited skin renewal to get rid of pigmentation and marks. This product is so great at doing the same that I have been using it religiously for over 2 years.
The formula, prior to the rebranding, is of slightly thicker consistency and has a mild, fresh scent. You can feel a film of the product sitting on your face the next morning but quite a lot of the cream gets absorbed by the skin too. It is not heavy and does not clog the pores at all. It provides instant brightness to the skin and with prolonged usage, it heavily reduces acne scars and leaves the skin looking more youthful and evenly toned. I enjoyed the day cream and serum from the old range as well but found this night cream to be the star of the pack. I hope that the new version retains the goodness of its predecessor and I will soon report back about all the products of the new Clinical range.
The night cream is priced at INR 1200 for a 50ml tub that will last you for several months. Overall, this product definitely gets 5 golden stars from me!
My lip issues first made an appearance when I was in college. It was the first time that I experienced dark, flaky patches all over my lips that looked horrendous! I tried a bunch of lip balms but everything failed at providing a permanent cure. After doing a lot of research I tried applying Vitamin E oil and that was the only thing that helped with the situation. However, the process was quite messy because I used to punch holes in Vitamin E capsules to extract the oil. Therefore, The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture-Protect Lip Care is a great alternative for long term usage.
This lip balm is infused with Vitamin E and is extremely nourishing and hydrating. The texture is not too heavy and the product can be applied underneath lipstick. It can also be worn on its own for a transparent, natural shine. As an added bonus, the formula has SPF 15 too, which is so important for the lips. The only thing that I do not like about this lip balm is that the smell and taste is a bit strange, but nothing too repulsive either.
Priced at INR 350 for a 4.2 gm twist up packaging, the product is slightly expensive but an excellent investment if nothing seems to be curing your pigmented, chapped lips.
I hope this review was useful. Buy the lip balm here.
I love the soft feel of velvet, therefore as soon as I noticed the Maybelline Color Sensational Velvet Matte Lipsticks on Nykaa, I added one to my cart. I went for the shade Flaming Fuchsia (MAT10), which in my opinion is a gorgeous tulip pink shade. The formula, however, is another story altogether.
The texture of this product is light and smooth. It glides on the lips to provide a satin finish that does have a unique softness to it, doing complete justice to the Velvet in the name. It is very hydrating but tends to slide around on the lips. It does last for around five hours but you will notice that it collects inside the creases and gives a very patchy finish. The pigmentation is pretty good but not completely opaque, and a few imperfections are visible through the color. Reapplication is also a little difficult due to the slippery nature of the formula.
Personally, I am not a huge fan of the formula because it gives an uneven finish. However, if you are able to look past that then the color is extremely stunning and you will enjoy the texture of this product. Priced at INR 475, the product comes in a cute 5ml packaging with a doe foot applicator. If you want a moisturizing lip color that has a semi-matte finish then you can buy this one but if you want a perfect matte liquid lipstick then give this one a pass.
I hope this review was helpful. You can buy this lip color here.
This post is dedicated to all the men who try to buy the perfect present for the women in their lives and also to anyone else who does not know much about makeup but wishes to gift something to a beauty lover. Here are 5 tips that will help you select a great and useful makeup item for the beauty addicts that you love.
1. Stay away from face products- It would be best to stay away from foundations, concealers, highlighters, bronzers and blushers because all these products need to be matched with the exact skin tone of the wearer. A slight mismatch in the shade can give horrible results and render the products useless, so go for these only if you know the exact shade that your friend uses from that brand.
2. Nail Polish is a savior- If your friend usually flaunts colors on her nails then you can’t really go wrong with a nice nail paint. Make sure to gift her a shade from a color family that she normally prefers. For example, if you often see her wearing pink on her nails then try to look for a shade of pink that she does not own.
3. Lipsticks bring a smile to the face- A humble lipstick is also quite a safe option to go for. Here too you will need to keep in mind the color choices of your friend. Keep an eye out for the lipsticks that she carries in her handbag, you can select a different shade from the same range. However, do not give her a bright red if she likes neutral lip shades.
4. Listen to her needs- Almost every beauty lover is always ranting about an amazing eyeshadow palette or lipstick that is so good but so expensive. Make a note of such wistful rants and you will know exactly what to buy for her on her next birthday. Just make sure that she hasn’t purchased the same for herself already!
5. Gift Cards are failproof- The easiest way to get out of this quandary is to give her a gift card for a beauty store that she likes to frequent, say Sephora. To add a more personal touch to this present, take her to the store or sit with her while she peruses their website.
These are some tips that will surely leave your friend surprised, impressed and super happy. The key is to pay attention to her style and notice what colors she leans towards. For the UK residents, Mother’s Day is around the corner so hopefully, these suggestions will help you out. Good luck with the shopping!
So it was my birthday yesterday and I thought that a birthday OOTD was in order. I was going out in the daytime but staying out till night, therefore I needed an outfit that would transition well from day to night. However, the outfit needed to be a little special because a birthday arrives only once each year. So here is what I wore on my birthday.
White is a great color for both night and day, so I chose this sheer white sleeveless shirt with plenty of bling provided by the golden beads. I paired it with my favorite pair of jeans because comfort is life. Also, I knew that there would be a lot of walking, so I went for these shimmery flats that bring the outfit together.
As for makeup, I opted for a subtle gold eyeshadow and a brownish red lipstick. I was quite happy with the final result as it seemed appropriate both for the day and the night and added a little sparkle to my special day!
